016 - What Is a Neutral Density (ND) Filter?

January 21, 2017 by simeon hendrix
“So you’ve heard the term Neutral Density (ND) Filter before... but what exactly is it? And how can you use it to add dynamic interest to your shots?”

A neutral density (ND) filter is like sunglasses for your lens. And just like with our eyes, wearing an ND filter on your lens directly affects the pupil size - or - the aperture size.

how-to-use-neutral-density-nd-filter

Why does that matter? Well, remember what we learned in Ep 004 (Demystifying the Exposure Triangle) - the wider your aperture (or f-stop), the more light that comes in, and the smaller your focus area (shallow depth of field.)

The smaller your aperture, the less light that comes in... but you now much larger focus area.

Follow along through this video and we'll explore how you can harness the power of an ND filter to shoot a very dynamic shallow depth of field image or scene - in the middle of the bright sunny day, shooting straight toward the sun.

015 - Know Yourself and Respect the Process - Austin Saylor Interview

January 12, 2017 by simeon hendrix

Help me welcome to the show Austin Saylor from Boone, North Carolina, who is proficient with VIRTUAL cameras…

He’s an after effects wizard that specializes in, but not limited to,animating hand lettered pieces. He’s wildly popular on Instagram, his pieces are almost magical in the way the smoothly move around the screen.

Please, let’s give a big Steady Focused welcome to my friend, Mr. Austin Saylor.

Key takeaways:

(02:00) - Austin and why he's drawn to motion lettering

(02:45) - Rock and roll and how being in a band influences creative professionals

(04:07) - Austin's unique relationship with Caleb Wojcik

(05:48) - Respecting the process... the power of trying different things in order to arrive to your niche in life. Put in the work. Continually put in the work. Take the long vision. Slow and steady wins the race.

(07:19) - Take a long perspective on things. Put in the work, the results are not up to us. A year, is not a long amount of time. Focus on the longer vision. Think long down the road. Everything you try will put you in a new place and be applicable to the next thing we do in life. Every experience builds upon the previous things we've done in life. Everything you're trying and learning along the way is going to feed into the thing you learn to love and focus on.

(10:00) - The results are not up to us. It's our job to show up and do the work. Respect the process. You can't control the outcome or what people will gravitate towards.

(11:24) - Congratulate yourself not on the work, but instead the effort.

(12:30) - Difficulties that come with being a freelance artist.

(15:00) - It's impossible to over communicate. Over communicate with clients.

(15:30) - Why after effects? Why moving graphics?

(16:30) - The power of mentors and communities. Reach out to individuals you are inspired by. Tell them. Talk to them. Invest into those relationships.

(20:45) - Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Make connections with interesting people and invest time into those relationships.

(21:30) - The power of the SeanWes Community. Austin and I are both strongly present within the SeanWes Community. Do yourself a favor and JOIN THIS COMMUNITY!! You will be surrounded by passionate creative entrepreneurs who want to help, inspire and lift others up.

(23:00) Put the work that you want to get hired for INTO your portfolio. Wake up early, put in hours before and after your day job.

(25:15) Focused on being focused. Being intentional about focus.

(28:35) - READ / LISTEN TO The Four Hour Work Week and Deep Work - highly recommended!

(30:00) - Train your brain to FOCUS. Protect yourself with undisturbed focus time. Productivity blocks. Moving your desk within the office so you can get more done by saying 'no' during specific blocks to get meaningful work done.

(31:00) - Meditation

(33:33) - Know yourself, know your limits, reign in when over stretched. Learn to control the things you can control and let go of things you can't control.
